Editor's DownTownHost Review

DownTownHost has been providing web hosting to personal and business clients for over a decade, since 2001. Customers can choose between a wide variety of plans in their different divisions, including shared hosting, reseller hosting, virtual private servers and dedicated server hosting as well as domain registration.

Throughout the rest of this DownTownHost review, we’ll have a look at the various plans and its features and compare them with the level of service and pricing offered. There are a number of factors to consider when choosing web hosting, so that you can prevent switching hosting companies all the time.

DownTownHost Plans

DownTownHost offers a range of shared and reseller hosting from various server locations around the United States, Netherlands and Asia. Whether you need to host a single website or dozens of websites, the shared hosting plans are more than suitable for you need. The reseller web hosting plans can also help you create a web hosting business of your own.DownTownHost Server Locations

DownTownHost Shared Web Hosting

Customers can choose from one of four shared web hosting plans, all of which include support for unlimited domains, email accounts and include a free site move should you require help. The most basic shared hosting plan is the Copper plan, which gives you 4GB of space and 100GB of bandwidth. The Copper plan is ideal for small websites that are less resource intensive. The Bronze plan offers 10GB of space and 200GB of bandwidth, a little more than the Copper plan.

If you operate websites that require unlimited bandwidth, you can choose either the Silver or Gold plan. The Silver plan offers 14GB of space while the Gold plan offers 20GB of storage; both of which are managed through the cPanel control panel and a pre-installed script library.

DownTownHost Reseller Web Hosting

The DownTownHost reseller plans are managed through the WHM/cPanel control panel and customers can host an unlimited number of domains on one single account. You can select one of three reseller plans, all of which allow overselling and include 3 IP addresses. The Bronze plan includes 20GB storage and 200GB bandwidth while the Silver plan includes 30GB of space and 300GB of monthly data transfer.

The most comprehensive reseller hosting plan gives you 40GB of storage and 400GB of bandwidth. As the owner of the reseller hosting plan, you have full control of the pricing you choose to charge your own customers.

DownTownHost VPS and Dedicated Server Hosting

When a shared hosting plan is not sufficient enough in being able to run your websites, it’s time to think about VPS hosting or dedicated server hosting. You can choose from five different VPS hosting plans that let you choose how much swap space, RAM, disk space and bandwidth you require. All virtual private server plans come with cPanel, full root access and 2 IP addresses.

When a VPS is not sufficient enough for the job, you can opt for one of the fully managed dedicated servers from DownTownHost. Depending on what you need in terms of performance, space, bandwidth and reliability, there are three dedicated server hosting plans available to choose from. Simply choose the server location, application you want to run and the operating system and let them handle the rest for you.

DownTownHost Reliability and Performance

The DownTownHost shared and reseller hosting plans are hosted by dual quad core servers with CentOS, redundant power backup, connection lines and LiteSpeed web server. DownTownHost has a number of experienced staff memebers that manage the servers and fix issues as soon as they occur.

The host uses seven datacenters around the world including the USA, Asia and Europe with more locations being added to their repertoire. These datacenters use high performance backup generators, premium backbone providers and security. For the average hosting customer, this means greater reliability and higher performance.

Here are 100 MB test files from each of DownTownHost’s data centers: Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Miami, Philadelphia, Amsterdam, and Singapore.

According to their uptime report, users can expect to receive a 99.99% uptime. With all the shared, reseller, VPS and dedicated hosting plans, you can expect the best reliability. It’s always important to choose a hosting company that is both reliable, trusted and has been in the business for quite some time. It eliminates the need to switch hosting companies often.

DownTownHost Customer Support

DownTownHost offers exceptional customer support through email, live phone support and their online helpdesk. If you have questions or concerns, you may also resort to the online knowledgebase section on the support page. Technical and customer support is available around the clock, regardless of whether it’s a holiday or not. If you need technical support in the middle of the night, you can call the host and speak to someone immediately.

If you opt for one of the VPS or dedicated server hosting plans, you can rest assured they are completely managed by professionals who know these servers inside out. High performance servers coupled with industry standard lines make the hosting experience all the better.

DownTownHost Pricing

The shared hosting plans range from $3.57 to $9.57/month, as the top tier plan offers unlimited bandwidth, domains and emails accounts. Depending on whether you make monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, annual, 2 year or 3 year payments for your hosting – the price you pay will differ. DownTownHost’s most basic shared hosting plan can cost you $5.95/month if you decide to pay monthly as opposed to bi-annually.

The reseller hosting plans from DownTownHost are affordable enough to allow you to make a good revenue stream. However, the two reseller plans are available for $16.95 and $30.95 per month with overselling being enabled. If you want to start a hosting business, their reseller plan is the best place to start.

DownTownHost’s five VPS hosting plans range from $19.95 to $69.95 per month, depending on the amount of swap space, storage, bandwidth and RAM you required. All VPS hosting plans arrive with cPanel and LiteSpeed as well. The same applies to their dedicated servers that range from as low as $220 up to $400 per month.

David's Review of DownTownHost:
I am a relatively new customer of DownTownHost (about 2 months plus now), and I have been very impressed by their service, both in terms of uptime and customer care. So far I have not noticed my website being down at any point of time throughout my term, except once where I could not upload somethings into wordpress, though the site could still be accessed at that same time. Furthermore the live chat is online most of the time, and any queries get answered really fast.

For me a webhost needs to have a few things - a good website design, no overselling, good reputation, a live chat button - all these things DownTownHost has. The only thing is that its plans are a bit pricey, unless you buy them in bulk. I got them at a discount though, so all's good 🙂
